Word cannot save due to a file permission error

Hi, I am using an AMD Athlon on windows xp (sp2)
I had Ms word 2003 installed on my computer for over 2-3 years and had not faced any problem till last week when I started getting an error mentioned in the title of this thread.
I googled it and mostly suggestions were to format the drive(I am not speaking of a flash drive) from Fat32 to NTFS. Can anyone give me an alternative and easy solution?

I'd check the file's properties. Find the file and right click it to get onto the properties, and then in there, look for something that says the file is blocked, and unblock it. Also, look for a security tab and make sure that your account and system is allowed to read/write to the file, and that the file is not read only.

Try saving it elsewhere, then overwrite the original in explorer. (eg, save to the desktop). Haven't had that error for a long time.

I checked all that no probs. Does it hav somethin to do with the registry?
I also found out that, when I try to save the file, it is trying to save into a tmp file which as long as I know is not possible.

Re: Word cannot save due to a file permission error

What do you mean by it not being possible to save to the .tmp file?

Microsoft Word uses the .tmp files for AutoRecovery. When it saves, it writes to that file first and then saves the actual file. That .tmp file Word saves should also be a hidden file as well.

Yeah Smith, you are right! But when I click on the save button, Word tries to save it into that file and gives me a permission error! What do you think its because?

Re: Word cannot save due to a file permission error

I honestly wouldn't know. Does Word do the same thing for all files or only from this particular file? One thing I would do is, when the temp file is there, is to check the temp file's permissions to see if it is set to read only/blocked or i the security tab, your user account has no permissions to the file. If any above is showing, uncheck read only, unblock the file if it's blocked, and set the permissions in the Security tab to allow your user account full control over the temp file. The same goes for your saved file as well. All of this can be found in the File Properties window.

Try it in safe mode. Make sure an AV is not blocking Word. If all else fails, upgrade to 2007.
