USB 2.0 vs Firewire

USB vs Firewire-
Ineed to add a firewire port to my computer for connection of my DSLR camera. I am trying to determine how many ports I should add. I currently run a Document and Photo scanner and an external hard drive that can run USB or Firewire, will I see get better performance on either of these on USB or FIrewire?
