What videocard is better?

GeForce 9800GTX 512MB

or

GeForce 8800GTS 512MB

or

GeForce 9800GT 1GB

What would you choice?
And what would give the highest FPS in games?

GeForce 9800GT 1GB -
This would probably give you the highest frame rates, because it has more RAM, (less time needed to re-read information about the images) and the 9800 would probably have the fastest onboard GPU making it faster at rendering said images

9800GT seems to be the best in my opinion as well. I have to check the specs on it though, as even if there is more RAM, the GTX might have some stronger point in processing/shading.

Re: What videocard is better?

The 8800GTS G92 (512MB) was merely a distraction for the 9 range GPUS (I did buy one though ). Personally, I couldn't live with the noise generated by the 9800GT. Even though a 1GB 9800GT could in theory give a higher bandwidth to the 9800GTX (because of the ram), the 9800GTX will overall, consistently outperform the GT in the majority of test (as it has more stream processors- so rendering power).

The GTX is a much more powerful card then the GT, even with the GT having more ram. It goes 9800GT 512MB, 9800GT 1GB then 9800GTX 512MB, the 1GB version is trying to fill the gap. If you want to know which one performs better, then look no further then the 9800GTX. However if you’re on a bit of a tighter budget, maybe consider a 9800GT 512MB.

Personally I would never go for a single slot graphics card with very high clock speeds (such as the 8800GT or 9800GT), because they produce far too much noise.

The 9800GTX is the most powerful, but I would choose none of the above. The Radeon 4850 is cheaper and it will give the 9800GTX a run for its money.

One thing that I have forgotton to ask, what monitor have you go?
THere is no point getting a GPU that can give 200FPS if your monitor can only display 60 of them. Thats another thing to consider. (It would be alot cheaper to go for a card that matches the capabilities of your monitor)

Re: What videocard is better?

There's a thing called vsync. That will lock the framerate to your monitor's refresh rate. The problem is, I myself hate vsync and I'm perfectly fine having my PC give me 1,000fps in some parts of old games with 3 8800 Ultras in SLi. I don't like vsync, but having it off shows me how much power I have left over though!

So yeah, you can get yourself a very strong GPU, you just won't see all of the frames. That's not a problem and just leaves room for FRAPs and stuff to record your screen. If you are worried about some of the slightly noticable horizontal tearing because of excessive amount of frames, games these days have VSync which will lock the FPS at your monitor refresh rate.

Re: What videocard is better?

If you've got the money, go for the 9800GTX or GT. I personally think the 8800GT is one of the best all-around cards, but ATi is catching up with their newer cards..
