Trouble with my RAM
I just got new RAM. When I put it in and pressed the power button, my computer made the wirring noise it makes usually. But unlike usual, it carried on making this noise instead of going quiet. Also, the light on the moniter was flashing, but it wasn't displaying anything. I know it fits, as it says:
Quote:
2GB PC 2100
266MHZ DDR DIMM
WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED
|
and my old one says:
Quote:
256MB PC2100 266MHZ DDR DIMM
WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Could be alot of things,
First off is your RAM (previous in Dual-Channel?)
Can your motherboard accept/support 2GB of RAM?
Make sure your latencies are correct (BIOS)
Check your motherboard manual,
Bad memory/RAM
Either RAM chips dont want to communicate or they are getting denied access.
Try those things but if nothing else works then either return/exchange your
RAM Chips or get a new motherboard that support them.
Before you try that tho, take out 1 stick, see if it works, then take out the
other one and put back the first and so on. Since im sure you dont have
RAM testers at home try those things. If nothing else exchange your chips.

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Thanks for the help, but I still don't know.
I have an IBM Intel 845G
These support a maximum of 2GB RAM
With just the 2GB RAM in there it doesn't work.
The man who built my computer didn't give me the manual for my motherboard.
I think I shall send it back.
What's a RAM tester?

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Well what you should try is to leave just 1GB module in there.
Try if that works, if it does try the other one (by themselves),
for example
Test run 1
Dimm1:1GB stick #1
Dimm2:Empty
Test run 2
Dimm1:1GB stick #2
Dimm2:Empty
Test run 3
Dimm1:Empty
Dimm2:1GB stick #1
Test run 4
Dimm1:Empty
Dimm2:1GB stick #2
Tell me your results.

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Take it out and put it back in. Make sure it is all the way down and that the clips are holding it down. Sometimes you need to press hard.

Re: Trouble with my RAM
I've tried taking it out and putting it in again - not that.
Also, my RAM is one 2GB stick, not 2 1GB.
I meant send the RAM back, not the computer

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Well,
Are you sure that your computer accepts 2GB dimms?
The most i have heard of was 2GB support but max of 1GB per dimm.
Make sure that your motherboard can handle 1 2GB Dimm.
Besides that, return it/exchange it.
Best of Luck

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Loneua is right, some motherboards may not support a single 2 GB DIMM. My old Sony rig could only handle a max of 512MB per slot, with four slots total

Re: Trouble with my RAM
Im thinking it only supports 1GB Dimms so 1x1GB = 2. 2x2GB = 4......
