Re: laptop playing up...

Wait a minute, if files are being deleted from your WINDOWS folder, you may have an infection in your laptop. By the by, do you mean your keys stick when ever you depress them or whenever you press one, it goes on like this:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

You might want to clean the keyboard or if all your keys display the same problem, you might want to check your BIOS settings. If that doesn't work, invest in a new USB keyboard.

Reformat the hard drive when infections like that happen, Windows is too damaged to be repaired.

Could be a trojan, maybe someone is playing with you?

I remember a little program called netbus(also BO) that you could screw with the infecteds keyboard and mouse(even open thier CD rom).

You may have a case of spyware eating away at your system files, or a trojan. Reinstall windows again, or try and put Service Pack 2 back on it again.

Re: laptop playing up...

Format the drive first, so it can't come back. Put SP2 and decent antivirus software (there are free ones) when you fix it.

Re: laptop playing up...

If you want to be REAL sure, you can buy a new hard drive for your laptop. Portable laptop drives cost around $85 USD for a 40 GB capacity and on up for larger capacities. The problem is that some viruses install themselves on the MBR (master boot record) which remains even after formatting the drive itself. If you're cheap, there's a way to wipe clean the MBR, but if you don't have the technical knowledge, replacing the drive may be the better way to go.

Your keys "sticking"? Like you press a key and there's a pause before the letter shows up on the screen? You may be the victim of some spyware known as a keylogger. It actually records all your keypresses and transmits it to some remote IP address/server where all your keypresses are logged and reconstructed to figure out your logins and passwords.

One way to check is to use a robust firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or Norton. Set the firewall to restrict access from your computer to the internet except for applications which you explicitly give permission. You may find that some weird, unknown programs are attempting to connect to the Internet from your computer. These are the "trojan horse" programs attempting to connect to their remote server and to relay their stolen data/findings. Once you know the name of the program you don't recognize, it is easy to search it out on your hard drive and to delete or uninstall it.
