I'm currently starting a community website using joomla and I have a few questions about banner ads.
First, I'm curious if banner ads work well for making money on a website. What could be an expected income from just using banner ads. I want to keep everything free on my site but im not sure what is the best way to make any money. Also, does anyone know how myspace or facebook make money? I know they both use banner ads but do they actually make alot of money just from people clicking the ads?

Generally banner ads operate via a unique click basis. As in, every time the banner is clicked, a certain amount of money is added to their account, but if they sit there and click it over and over again, it won't add the money. If a banner is clicked excessively by the same person, chances are that the banner will be removed and the account of the banner displayer will be banned from the system.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this is how Adsense works. Which is why many mischievous people will sit there and repeatedly click the banner ad, in hopes of the user getting banned from the system.

This usually works too, but chances are it's not too legal :P
